Bolivar Peninsula - Galveston County - Texas
What is Bolivar Peninsula?
The Bolivar Peninsula is a beautiful beach community that
is just a ferry ride away from Galveston! Many tourist don't
realize all the opportunities and fun that are present on
this wonderful stretch of island.
The Bolivar Peninsula is a narrow strip of land on the
Texas Gulf Coast in the eastern part of Galveston County.
The peninsula is separated by less than three miles from
Galveston Island by the channel to the port, the entrance
from the Gulf of Mexico to Galveston Bay. Free public
ferries link the Bolivar Peninsula with Galveston Island
and at least one ferry is operational 24 hours a day.
The island stretches along the Gulf of Mexico for 27 miles,
with it's widest point between Crystal Beach and Caplen,
which is 3.5 miles wide. The island's narrowest point in
the Gilchrist area is 1/4 mile wide. Although classified as
a peninsula, it's actually a barrier Island, and is
accessible by land from a bridge over rollover pass to the
mainland through southern Chambers County and High
Island. Extending the length of the peninsula at its
northwest side is the Gulf's Intracoastal Waterway which
runs from Brownsville, Texas to Florida.
The Bolivar Peninsula has five residential communities
which are: Caplen, Crystal Beach, Gilchrist, High Island
and Port Bolivar.
The western portion of the Bolivar Peninsula, including
the unincorporated communities of Port Bolivar and
Crystal Beach, are within the Galveston Independent
School District. That portion is served by the K-8
Crenshaw Elementary and Middle School, located in Port
Bolivar, and Ball High School (9-12), located in Galveston.
The eastern portion of the peninsula, including the
unincorporated communities of High Island and Gilchrist,
is served by the High Island Independent School District.
